Background

Why cross-border commuters need to be particularly careful

As a German cross-border commuter, you move between two social security and tax systems. What makes sense for Swiss or Germans in their home country can quickly become expensive or ineffective for cross-border commuters.

Typical problem areas:

👉 Good information saves a lot of money here over the years.

Retirement provision

The three most important components

AHV – the state foundation

AHV is mandatory for all cross-border commuters and secures a basic pension in old age as well as benefits in the event of invalidity or death.

✅ Your AHV contribution years are not lost – even if you later live permanently in Germany.

Pension fund (BVG) – your most important provision asset

Through your Swiss employer, you automatically build up capital in the pension fund. It provides you with:

  • Retirement pension or capital
  • Invalidity and survivors' benefits

⚠️ Particularly important for cross-border commuters:

  • Special rules apply when changing jobs or moving away
  • Part of the capital is not freely available

✅ For many cross-border commuters, the pension fund is the largest asset alongside property.

Pillar 3a – usually not a good idea

The tax-advantaged Swiss pillar 3a is not suitable for most genuine German cross-border commuters:

  • Contributions are not deductible in DE and usually not in CH either
  • Capital is blocked for the long term

👉 Rule of thumb: Returning to Germany daily = pillar 3a usually unsuitable.

Better alternatives

Instead, many cross-border commuters use:

  • German direct insurance (Direktversicherung, §3 Nr. 63 EStG)
  • Basic pension (Basisrente/Rürup)
  • individual investment and provision solutions

✅ These can be combined much better with German tax law.

Health insurance

A decision with long-term effect

Your right of option

As a cross-border commuter, you may choose between:

⏰ Attention:

  • Decision within 3 months of starting work
  • After that, the choice is usually permanently binding

Which solution suits you?

Income protection

Illness, invalidity & income protection

Switzerland mainly uses the concept of invalidity, not classic occupational disability. You are covered by:

⚠️ In many cases this is not enough to maintain your previous standard of living.
