The disappearing intermediaries in the insurance industry

Over the past five years, the insurance industry in Germany has recorded a continuous decline in registered insurance intermediaries. On 1 January 2020, 198.452 intermediaries were registered, whereas on 1 January 2025 there were only 181.761. This corresponds to a decrease of around 8,4 % over this period. DIHK aktuell

Tied insurance agents are particularly affected: their number fell from 109.972 in 2023 to 103.796 in 2024, a decrease of 5,6 % within one year. PROCONTRA 15.01.2024

By contrast, the number of insurance brokers remained relatively stable. On 1 January 2024, 46.383 brokers were registered, only slightly fewer than the 46.509 in the previous year. PROCONTRA

These developments point to a consolidation of the market, with tied agents in particular being affected, while individual brokers show a certain stability.
